Coffee – Good For Your Health? November 10, 2008

Black as the devil, hot as hell, pure as an angel, sweet as love. That’s the recipe for coffee, according to the utterly French statesman Talleyrand (1754-1838).

Coffee is harmless in moderation, but as with most things, excessive consumption can be damaging to your health. From the health point of view, it is the caffeine content of coffee that attracts the most interest. Caffeine is a mild stimulant, and gives you that “pick me up” that many coffee drinkers yearn for. For most of us a cup of coffee is just to give us a mild lift in our spirits to keep us on the go through our day. For some of us, coffee plays a larger role in their work. Knowledge workers often claim their thought processes are improved and they can work more effectively and faster when well fuelled by endless cups of coffee, especially when working through the hours they might normally expect to be sleeping. Those who drink a lot of coffee can become over-stimulated, and unable to sleep. Taken to excess, they can even start to experience minor mood changes and physical effects like mild tremors. Caffeine is known to be mildly addictive, but appears to vary between individuals. There is more to coffee than its stimulant effect from the caffeine. It has complex and interesting flavors that many coffee drinkers enjoy. If you choose to add too much cream and sugar to your coffee you may not be acting in your body’s best interests, especially if you take several cups a day. In this case, to blame your coffee for those added pounds is a little likes shooting the messenger for bringing bad news. Coffee appears to have beneficial effects lowering the risk of Parkinson’s disease and colon cancer. Research also suggests coffee reduces your chances of getting asthma, type 2 diabetes, gallstones and cirrhosis of the liver.

Yes that’s true, like every thing in this world, coffee has the advantage and disadvantage as well. You know the same think is discussed for the “egg”, scientist agree that taking more than 4 eggs a day may cause you so called “forget the name” disease and not taking it may cause you the poor “Albumin in your blood” which is equivalent to the poor percentage of “protein”. So, coffee like the rest of stuff has its own advantages but we don’t have to take it as the herbal medication since it has the side affects as well. The real alive example of the coffee addicted is me since I couldn’t take less than 12 cups a day and I had encountered to many problems such as headache, insomnia and so on.

  2. ceasar Says:

Tomas Depaulies said that coffee is far more healthful than it is harmful,” says Tomas DePaulis, PhD, research scientist at Vanderbilt University’s Institute for Coffee Studies, which conducts its own medical research and tracks coffee studies from around the world. “For most people, very little bad comes from drinking it, but a lot of good.”

Consider this: At least six studies indicate that people who drink coffee on a regular basis are up to 80% less likely to develop Parkinson’s, with three showing the more they drink, the lower the risk. Other research shows that compared to not drinking coffee, at least two cups daily can translate to a 25% reduced risk of colon cancer, an 80% drop in liver cirrhosis risk, and nearly half the risk of gallstones.

Coffee even offsets some of the damage caused by other vices, some research indicates. “People who smoke and are heavy drinkers have less heart disease and liver damage when they regularly consume large amounts of coffee compared to those who don’t,” says DePaulis.

There’s also some evidence that coffee may help manage asthma and even control attacks when medication is unavailable, stop a headache, boost mood, and even prevent cavities.

COFFEE!!!I would say it’s THE world best drink. Well, I’m a coffee lover especially black coffee. People state that caffeine keeps them awake but let me tell you, it doesn’t affect me at all. That is how much I’m addicted to coffee.
But in the other hand, I would agree with Ceasar that it does give a wide range of side effects. According to the website of ‘Anti-Aging Guide’, it says that caffeine can lead to many diseases like said by Michels KB, Holmberg L, Bergkvist L, Wolk A. from Obstetrics & Gynecology Epidemiology Center, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA 02115, USA that ‘Coffee, caffeinated tea, and caffeine have been suggested to play a role in breast carcinogenesis or in the promotion or inhibition of tumour growth’.

Well, therefore guys, cut down on your caffeine intake.

I still have same opinion about coffee, it is not good when you become addicted with that. it makes people hard to concentrate, sleepy and et cetera but I also belief that beside give bad impact coffee is also have advantages especially when people who are smoking and alcoholism. like what i read in one article that “People recovering from alcoholism seem to drink more coffee” and like what Dr.Martin said in this article is “He pointed out that coffee and tobacco both affect the brain, but while nicotine and alcohol act on the same “reward pathways” in the brain, caffeine operates differently.” therefore in my opinion who are smoker better to start drink coffee.

I can’t drink because I’ll get headache but when I have headache then only I drink coffee because it’s make me fresh mind. Here somebody was mentioning coffee is not good to drink more if is addicted it makes people hard to concentrate. It is not true coffee make the people to concentrate very well on their work.

  9. Ayesha Says:

Well, coffee somehow is not good for your health if we consumed too much. Because of the health risks associated with higher levels of caffeine, as well as the risk of physical dependence that can come with four cups of coffee or more each day, it’s wise to limit your caffeine intake. (Withdrawal symptoms can include cravings, headache, fatigue and muscle pain.)

    http://stress.about.com/od/stresshealth/a/caffeine.htm

Caffeine is a drug, popularly consumed in coffee just like Cigarettes that contained nicotine. My dad is a coffee lover and he takes at least 5 cups of coffee per day.He is addicted with it and he needs it before going to sleep. Therefore, for some individuals coffee is not to keep them awake but the otherwise. We as an individuals who is coffee lover need to reduce drinking coffee and as a friend to a coffee lover need to remind our friends as we did to Brad!!

Coffee has it advantages and disadvantages as well just like other things. Today, people drink a lot of coffee to make themselves avoid from sleeping. But, the disadvantages is drinking a lot of coffee will harm our health. Furthermore, a person may be addicted to coffee if he/she drinks a lot of coffee.

  12. morpheus Says:

Similarly to everyone, I would say that drinking coffee has both advantages and disadvantages, and since you, Nimesh, asked the benefits of drinking a coffee, I will only state the benefits of it.
Caffeine in coffee makes our brain alert and receptive of new information.
    It keeps us awake.
Regular consumption of coffee decreases the risk of type II diabetes and many other health risks.

  13. nooraldaim Says:

Well first Eric and Ee lynn if you ever try a cup of my tea you will know for sure the best drink in the world. I used to drink two cups of coffee a day and if one day passes without having a cup of coffee for sure the next day i’ll wake up with a headache. I really dint like the addictiveness of it and the headaches, so i decided to leave it. Now am all free i take coffee randomly and no headaches anymore. I really prefer my cup of tea than any other thing.
Coffee has both advantages and disadvantages and like Anuar who clearly stated them out (thanks bro). So for me everything is to be taken in moderation.

  14. amit Says:

After analyzing data on 126,000 people for as long as 18 years, Harvard researchers calculate that compared with not partaking in America’s favorite morning drink, downing one to three cups of caffeinated coffee daily can reduce diabetes risk by single digits. But having six cups or more each day slashed men’s risk by 54% and women’s by 30% over java avoiders.
Though the scientists give the customary “more research is needed” before they recommend you do overtime at Starbuck’s to specifically prevent diabetes, their findings are very similar to those in a less-publicized Dutch study. And perhaps more importantly, it’s the latest of hundreds of studies suggesting that coffee may be something of a health food — especially in higher amounts.
